Jorge Villafaña has been called up to the U.S. Men's National Team for the second consecutive time, to take part in two World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and Panama during the next international break.
The 27-year old defender recently played the full 90 minutes in a confident 3-1 victory for Santos over Necaxa in Copa MX, and spoke to the club during the week about this new opportunity to represent his country once again.
"I am very motivated by this call to the national team," he said Wednesday afternoon, wrapping up an intense session under Chepo de la Torre as the team prepares for its week 11 road game in Tijuana. "It motivates me to fight and fight for a position in Santos, to continue working, and as always, to be prepared for whatever comes."
In a recent interview for U.S. Soccer ahead of the roster announcement, head coach Bruce Arena spoke about four new additions who received their first call-ups in January, with Villafaña included in the group.
"We believe in those players," Arena said in the interview which was published on ussoccer.com. "The common denominator there, with the exception of Dax (McCarty), is that they're young players that should have the opportunity to play for the U.S. National Team a lot down the road. We are trying to balance this roster and also look down the road, and I think these guys are exciting prospects for our program. "
On Arena, Villafaña says he's confident in his national team coach and he's already had a great experience with his first call from the USA's January camp.
"I already had the opportunity to be in a call and it was a very good experience. Bruce Arena really is a coach who likes to work and also focuses a lot on the player. It's my turn to play and I'll try to seize the opportunity. "
In the same way, "Villa" was vocal about his goals with Los Guerreros heading into the second half of the 2017 Clausura. "(My goals with the team are) to continue working and supporting the group. There are still many possibilities to be in the (playoffs) and we know that it is not easy but we will achieve it, we have to be there.
Villafaña will meet up with the team in San Jose on January 19 to begin preparations for the team's game at Avaya Stadium on March 24 against Honduras, and the second on March 28 in Panama.
