Head coach Chepo de la Torre didn't hold back when asked about what Bejamin Galindo means to Santos Laguna and Mexican football.
For "Chepo," Galindo, who has served as de la Torre's assistant coach since August of 2016, has earned his nickname "The Master" for the work ethic, expectations, and example he sets for his players and all his past teammates.
"For everything he did in the clubs where he belonged, the titles he won, his participation in national team, everything he's done is an example to follow," he commented. "In all aspects, Benjamin has been exemplary."
Galindo is the only figure in the history of Club Santos Laguna to have won a title as a player and as a coach. This Saturday, Santos Laguna parent company Orlegi Sports will use the team's game against TM Football Club, another Orlegi Sports team, as a tribute to "The Master" in Tamaulipas, where Galindo made his professional debut as a player.
Throughout his career, which began in Tampico with "La Jaiba," he's won best player, best midfielder twice, and best manager of the tournament with Santos in 2012.
With Tampico, he scored 23 goals in 135 games from 1982-1986. With Santos, he scored 24 goals in 101 games from 1994-1997, helping los Guerreros achieve their first ever title in 1996.
Before lifting Santos' first trophy, he won his first league title with Chivas in the 1986-´87 season. After three years in Torreon, he went on to win two league titles and a CONCACAF title with Cruz Azul. His last feat was a league title with Pachuca in 1999.
Saturday's Copa Orlegi game against "La Jaiba" will serve as a homenage to Galindo, who will coach los Guerreros against the club where his legend was born.
"It's going to be very attractive for the people," said Chepo. "There has been some time in which there has been no first division football in Tampico. With the tribute to Benjamin, whom they love very much in Tampico, this game will be of particular enjoyment for fans to come see two great teams play each other, taking advantage of the FIFA break."
The game will kick off at 8:00pm local time and can be seen via Multimedios Deportes locally, SKY nationally, and through Santos Laguna's Facebook Live page from any place in the world.
