Club Santos Laguna and Spanish club Celta Vigo have agreed to the definitive transfer of Néstor Araujo.
The central defender leaves Santos having won several titles and accolades since his arrival in 2013, including two league championships (2015 and 2018 Clausura), the 2014 Copa MX, and the 2015 Campeon de Campeones.
He was named to the Liga MX Ideal XI after the 2017 Clausura, and won the Golden Ball for Best Defender to close the 2016 - 2017 season.
Through his valient effort on the field for los Guerreros, he became a key figure for Mexico under head coach Juan Carlos Osorio.
Araujo offered a statement with regard to the transfer:
"It's an opportunity to continue growing and fulfill my dream, and the end of a great cycle at Santos Laguna. My family and I are very happy to come to Europe, arrive to a team like Celta Vigo, and to have the opportunity to demonstrate what I can do and put Mexico's name on high.
"I'm very grateful and I don't get tired of saying it. The best decision I've made in my career was to play for Santos Laguna.
"In Torreón I have matured in my game and I have grown as a person. I am grateful to the fans for the support and for the love they have given me ... I am grateful to my colleagues who have always been there for me; my individual achievements have been thanks to them. In the end if I looked good, it was because I had the support of the other defenders supporting the goal, the midfielders, those up top - they all helped us win. I have to thank all of the coaches I had during my cycle at Santos, and obviously (President) Alejandro Irarragorri and (Vice President) José Riestra, who allowed me to achieve one of my dreams and have facilitated everything so that I can go to Europe.
"I hope somehow that I have fulfilled people's expectations of me that I leave a good memory among those with whom I have crossed paths"
With respect to the transfer of Araujo to the Spanish first division side, Irarragorri offered the following:
"This is an important day for us as an institution and for Néstor as a person and professional. I feel very proud of the way he has worked; he is a player who came here looking to grow and he has done that through his work. He is a great team player and has been an example for everyone here.
"In life, success is not based solely on achieving championships and meeting your goals, but also being able to develop as people. Santos Laguna seeks to generate these realities. Néstor asked us to support him on his road to (playing in) Europe - that was his dream and today it's his reality. It is significant for what it means to him as a human being, and a player, and for the great potential it creates for his future.
"We are very grateful for the professionalism the people of Celta de Vigo have shown us; negotiations have been very fluid. I'm sure that this first step Néstor will take in Europe will carry the name of Santos Laguna very high, and especially the name of Mexico."
The club appreciates the constant dedication and professionalism shown by Néstor and wishes him the very best as he embarks on this new chapter in Europe.
